Blackheath Skip Hire Health and Safety Policy
Purpose: This policy sets out the commitments and systems that govern safe operations for our skip hire and rubbish removal services. It is designed to protect employees, contractors, customers and third parties from harm while maintaining regulatory compliance and promoting best practice across our waste collection and skip hire operations. All staff and subcontractors are expected to observe this policy as part of their contractual duties.Scope and Application
This policy applies to every activity connected with waste handling, skip delivery, on-site rubbish collection and vehicle operations performed by or on behalf of the company. It covers routine collections, one-off clearances, waste transfer activities and any duties performed at customer premises or on public highways. The policy is not a substitute for specific risk assessments and method statements which must be carried out for higher-risk tasks.
Policy Statement: We recognise our responsibilities under applicable health and safety law and commit to preventing injury, ill-health and environmental harm by controlling the hazards associated with the transportation, loading and storage of waste. This includes managing manual handling risks, traffic safety during skip deliveries, safe operation of plant and vehicles, and the segregation of hazardous or prohibited waste types. The aim is to provide a safe working environment and minimise risks to the public and customers when providing our rubbish removal and skip hire services.
Responsibilities and Organisational Arrangements
Management retains overall responsibility for health and safety and will ensure adequate resources are assigned. Key responsibilities include:- Ensuring staff are trained, competent and fit for tasks related to waste collection and skip hire.
- Maintaining vehicles and equipment in a safe condition.
- Carrying out regular inspections, audits and risk assessments.
- Investigating incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Supervisors and drivers must implement safe systems of work, maintain daily vehicle checks and report defects. Employees must follow safe working procedures, use personal protective equipment and report hazards or near misses immediately. Subcontractors must comply with this policy and provide evidence of competency and insurance before commencing work.
Training and competence: All personnel involved in rubbish collection and skip hire will receive induction training covering vehicle safety, manual handling, hazardous waste awareness, site-specific hazards and emergency procedures. Ongoing training will be provided for new equipment, changes in legislation or when incidents highlight training needs. Records of training and refresher courses will be retained.
Operational Controls: Safe operation of our skip hire service requires clear controls. These include pre-shift vehicle checks, correct loading and securing of skips, adherence to weight limits, safe lifting techniques, and the use of appropriate lifting aids. Drivers must follow traffic safety protocols when delivering or collecting skips, including the correct use of warning signage and cones when working on roadsides. Waste segregation procedures will be enforced to prevent hazardous mixing and to support lawful disposal.
Hazardous materials and prohibited waste: Materials such as asbestos, solvents, pressurised containers, certain chemicals and items that may present a biological hazard are not to be placed in standard skips. Where such materials are discovered, operations will stop and trained personnel will follow the designated safe handling and disposal procedures. Any suspected hazardous load will be isolated and specialist waste carriers will be used when necessary. Records of hazardous waste transfers will be maintained in line with regulatory requirements.
Incident reporting and emergency response: All accidents, near misses and environmental spills must be reported immediately. The company will maintain emergency response plans that cover first aid, spill containment, fire response and coordination with emergency services. Incidents will be investigated promptly, and findings used to update risk assessments and procedures. Employees are expected to cooperate fully with any investigation and to participate in corrective actions.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement: We will monitor compliance through routine inspections, vehicle checks, incident trend analysis and periodic safety audits. Performance indicators, such as incident frequency, training completion rates and audit outcomes, will be reviewed by management. The policy and associated procedures will be reviewed at least annually or sooner after significant change or incident to drive continual improvement in our rubbish collection and skip hire services.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided where risk assessments indicate need. Typical PPE includes high-visibility clothing, hi-vis jackets, gloves, steel-toe boots and eye protection. PPE must be used in accordance with instruction and maintained in serviceable condition. Equipment such as tail-lifts, winches and lifting gear will be inspected and tested at defined intervals.
Commitment: By implementing and enforcing this policy, Blackheath Skip Hire demonstrates a commitment to safe operations, environmental responsibility and legal compliance in its waste and skip hire activities. All staff share responsibility for health and safety and are encouraged to contribute ideas for safer working practices. This policy will be communicated to employees, contractors and made available to stakeholders on request, and will be supported by senior management to ensure an effective safety culture.
